It is the time of year to think about Easter! The first thing comes to mind is that Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness preparing himself for the destiny God had in mind.   “At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.” Mark 1:12-13, NIV.

Growing up, I would often give up something that was near and dear to me, so I could feel a bit of Jesus’s sacrifice. I could never endure what He gave for us, but I tried. In my younger days, I would give up sweets or soda or something that I liked, and if I told my friends what I was doing they were the first ones to call me out. As I was chewing on that chocolate bar, they would make sure not to comment until I had swallowed the first, delicious bite! “Didn’t you give up chocolate this lent?” they would say. Later in life, I began to change my theory because someone suggested, “Instead of giving up something, do something good.” I have tried that too. Now it is time for something even better! Grab a girlfriend for this ride! You will have an awaking with this challenge.

Have you ever bought a present for friend and thought, “Gosh, I like it so much I am going to get myself one!” I have, and way too many times! It is fun to say, “I loved it so much for you I got one too!” In today’s world, gifts flow freely and we buy whatever we want when we want. So here is a great 40-day challenge. I did this challenge a few years back and was shocked about how much I spent on trivial things and shocked what I spent on myself.

As you might know, this year my word is, “selflessness.” For the Lenten challenge, you cannot buy anything for yourself besides necessities, and no, a new spring purse or lip color is not necessity! You can buy your toiletries, hair products and of course food. Yes, this is about you and not spending on yourself, watching and looking for the waste. If that isn’t hard enough for you, I have part Two! Give away 7 items every day (clothes, house goods etc.). Give them to someone in need or a local charity. You will be doing your spring cleaning and you won’t even know it. You may want to do all the items once a week and not every day, but it is so freeing and heart lifting.

Share this, and let me know if you are in for the challenge! I will put a Facebook event up on my Ride of Your Life page. I would love to see how you are doing. Share the funny stories! Let me know if your girlfriends say, “Oh you wore that same shirt a month ago” or let’s see how you found that sweater you haven’t worn yet. Let me know what your husband’s face looks like when you tell him about this challenge. Maybe, you will be like me and not tell him and then hear, “Gosh, our credit card was really low this month.” The best part is we will be praying for each other and preparing ourselves for Easter; sacrificing and giving back and not over-indulging. There is so much waste in this world and so much stuff, it starts in our own home. Let’s do this!

PS Happy Valentines Day! God is crazy in love with you.

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” Isaiah 58:6-7 NIV
